Doing Our Duty

Each day brings His return closer, and the urgency to share the news of it is more urgent than yesterday.

Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy the city.” But he appeared to his sons-in-law to be jesting.

Genesis 19:14 (NASB)

Our verse today is of a sad story, on the eve of the destruction of Sodom Lot tells his future sons-in-law of the impending judgment and that they need to flee. It is their reaction that makes it a sad story; they did not believe their future father-in-law, and indeed may have mocked him. Lot knew of God and His special relationship with his uncle, he knew the fate of Sodom was truly sealed. In this, you can sense the urgency of Lot coming to his sons-in-law and beseeching them to leave Sodom and his sadness at their response to his urgent message.

Dear Reader, we also have an urgent message to deliver to those around us – our nearest and dearest. There is a judgment coming when the Lord Jesus will return to save His own, and only His own. Each day brings His return closer, and the urgency to share the news of it is more urgent than yesterday. It is our duty to guide those we know to the lifeboat of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. Whether they believe us or not is their responsibility, just as Job’s sons-in-law were responsible for what they did with the news given to them. May we do our duty to share the news of salvation, praying for those who hear it.

“… Behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of salvation”
2 Corinthians 6:2
