Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.” Mark 14:18
Betrayal is something that no one likes. It breaks down friendships and trust between two or more people. Nations often give the death penalty for those who betray their nation on a national level. Yet, despite the dislike of betrayal, there are people who will betray others.
Mark records Jesus, while eating His last meal with the disciples, saying that one of them will betray Him.
The closer a person gets to another person, the easier it becomes to be hurt by that person. Enemies are expected to harm a person, but never a friend, yet they often do.
The hardest part is when a friend turns their back on a friend in the form of betrayal. This can be a simple thing that does not cause real physical harm to larger things that cause a person to go to prison or worse.
Very few people go into a relationship expecting to betray their friend. The betrayal occurs when fear or pride gets in the way. One does not want to accept responsibility for choices the two made, so there is a betrayal. Other times, one does not selfish pride to be harmed causing a betrayal to go a different direction.
Believers will quickly claim that they will never betray Jesus, but many will do it. Out of fear and selfish pride, some will directly go against Jesus and His followers. They will bring harm to His movement, not only in personal sin but in direct betrayal.
Instead of betraying Jesus, one must remain strong and true to Him. One must be willing to walk the path He is one with Him, rather than trying to stop Him and go a different direction.
If you have ever been betrayed by a friend or loved one, you know the pain that it can cause. You may have even betrayed someone else at some point in your life. As a believer, there is always an opportunity to betray Jesus.
Each day you have a choice as to whether you will follow Jesus and support Him or not, betray Him or not. Do not allow yourself, in fear or selfish pride, make the choice to betray Jesus. Keep your heart pure and true to Him as you follow Him. Stand with Jesus through it all.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal areas in your life in which you are betraying Him; that you will remain a true friend of Jesus; and that God will not find you guilty of betrayal.
