They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.”
Matthew 14:17-18 (NASB1995)
In our scripture today, we are in the familiar story of the feeding of the five thousand. All those present marvelled at this great miracle of our Lord, just as we do today. Even more marvellous when you consider that the five thousand only counted the men; the true number would have been far greater when you included the women and children present. But we need to step back a bit to read our verses, which highlight a valuable point for us to consider.
The Lord challenged the disciples to feed the crowd: “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” Immediately, their response was the same as anyone challenged to do something for God. They made excuses why they couldn’t do it; “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” Rather than berating them, their Lord stretched out His hands, “Bring them here to Me.”
Dear Reader, this is what our Lord says to us today when faced with a challenge to do something for Him – “Bring them here to Me.” We may feel inadequate for the challenge laid before us, but we serve a God who uses the weak to achieve the unexpected (1 Corinthians 1:27). We don’t need qualifications or resources. We only need to faithfully hand over what we have to Him who can do anything – in His hands, our little is more!
