If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25 (NASB1995)
Today’s verse for our meditation comes as a result of recent memories of walking in the countryside by my childhood home. I remember many walks. Most of these took place fifteen minutes north of my village, uphill through the fields of barley, grass, and cattle. My destination was the old Dundonald Colliery, a site of three large raised plateaus reclaimed by nature. Each plateau had grasses, shrubs, and many Willow or Birch trees, with many trails through them. The ground was always warm, encouraging more new shoots of greenery.
I enjoyed the vision of the trees, birdsong, and insects of this haven – it was also my place of prayer and divine solitude. I had high places where I could sit watching the scenery below, glimpsing the occasional deer, hare, or geese feeding on stubble of a distant field. These were where I met often with God, and His presence was very real to me. I was blessed often in these places, maybe even by a close encounter with some creature of His Creation – these thrilled my heart and encouraged me in His closeness.
Dear Reader, it is one thing to believe God and His Word and to proclaim it vocally, but to walk by His Spirit is a different thing altogether. This is putting faith into action in our everyday life, in whatever we do and wherever we walk. Our morning devotions are important to our spiritual wellbeing and our relationship with God our Father, but when we finish them and leave the house, God still goes with us. Wherever we walk today, whether it be downtown or in the park, let us remember God’s presence and whisper a prayer of thanksgiving – walking with His Spirit.
