May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble!
May the name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high!
Psalm 20:1 (NASB)
If there is one thing in life that is certain, it is that times of trouble will come from time to time. Troubles by their nature are not biased, coming to those both great and small in life. The greatest leveller in life is probably ill health, particularly cancer. These were my thoughts when I was reading this psalm by David, who knew both status and troubles. But in the first verse of this psalm, there is hope to be found, according to David.
In the first line, we read, “may the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!” It occurred to me that for God to answer prayer, He must first hear it. Also, the prayer must be in line with His will and His Word; only then will He answer our prayers. As children of God, we need to be in a close relationship with Him, just as our own children are with us – then we will truly know Him, and what prayers are likely to be answered.
Dear reader, if you remain close to God your Father each day, He not only hears you but recognises your voice. It is too easy to be distracted by our troubles that we gaze at them, rather than on the One who can sweep them away. Let each of us cast our cares upon Him (1Peter 5:7), that He set us “securely on high!”
