The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
What struck me about today’s verse was the first line, “The precepts of the Lord are right.” The word “right” in this sentence is yâshâr in Hebrew; that is correct, straight, or level. It was “level” that re-ignited a memory of woodwork class in High school. I loved the woodworking class, the various tools, and the smell of sawdust. Probably the most important tool was the spirit level, which by the position of a small bubble of spirit, told you whether your work was on the right line – on the level. Today’s verse points to the Word of God being “right“; being on the level by the evidence of the Holy Spirit as we apply it in our lives.
“The commandment of the Lord is pure,” tells us why the Spirit Level is right in His Word – it is pure. The purity here is the integrity of God’s Word; it is utterly sincere in all it says and clean beyond our understanding of cleanliness. Man often claims innocence by proclaiming, “my hands are clean,” but in the Word of God…His hands are clean before all men for eternity! It is the purity of His Word that leads us each time we read it, illuminating the path before us with His Light.
The unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
Dear Reader, are you on the right level in life – the Spirit Level? Just as we needed to use the level in woodwork, we must use the Spirit Level found in God’s Word, in all its purity and light. Every job requires a level of woodwork, and every day requires the Spirit Level too!
