But You, O Lord, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.
I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He answered me from His holy mountain. Selah.
I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me round about.
Today’s devotion is a bit of a self-indulgence. As some of you will know, Psalm 3:3 is one of my favorite and most quoted verses of Scripture. It appeals to the historian in me who has read of the Roman tortoise shield formation and the famous Viking shield wall, which can also incorporate a shield roof too for assaulting a castle. Another military formation that can be applied to this verse is the infantry square formed up against calvary, used by the British troops in the Peninsular War against the French. These military formations can break, but the shield that our Father God forms around us is impenetrable, hallelujah!
Often in their moment of crisis, troops had to cope the best they could and wait for rescue or reinforcements. There was no guarantee that any messenger sent out would be successful. But we find in verse 4 that the child of God has no such cause to worry; they cry to God, and He hears them in Heaven. Take a peaceful pause, brethren.
In verse 5, we find that God hears and will answer us. It is a source of reassurance. We can rest in our beds and arise, ready to face the day ahead in His strength. In each new day, it is right that we should begin by speaking to God, thanking and praising Him for His many blessings, safe in the knowledge He hears us.
“In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice; in the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” Psalm 5:3
Dear Reader, if you are a child of God saved by Christ, you have nothing to fear today! Those arrayed against you may be many or formidable foes, but the arm of Almighty God is holding you securely. When you call on Him, He is there, and His impenetrable shield will sustain you against any foe.
