Simple Generosity

How generous are we with others, family, friends, and strangers that we meet each day?

He who is generous will be blessed,
For he gives some of his food to the poor.
Proverbs 22:9 (NASB1995)

Recently, I saw a most beautiful thing; it was an example of loving generosity from our six year old grandson, who was visiting us. After our evening meal of pizza, our wee gem broke open his chocolate Kit Kat biscuit, which had 5 thin fingers, and shared it with everyone, saying, “I don’t need it all.” This was his own spontaneous act of love, and it blessed all our hearts. This example of childlike love stayed in my mind long after our daughter and grandson were back home, and he likely in his bed.

It may be a simple lesson for each of us who know and love Jesus our Lord, but it is an important one that measures the health of our walk with God and His Word. How generous are we with others, family, friends, and strangers that we meet each day? In Matthew Henry’s commentary on our verse, he highlights the generosity to others at personal cost (generosity at no cost has little value) that they may share in God’s provision to the giver. The receiver will bless their benefactor, but most importantly, God will bless their loving generosity.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD,
And He will repay him for his good deed.
Proverbs 19:17

Dear Reader, when was the last time you were spontaneously generous, like my grandson? Who can you bless today in a simple act of generosity? Pray about it… ask your Father God to bring someone your way!
