“But he who listens to me shall live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”
Proverbs 1:33 (NASB1995)
As I pondered our verse today, I was reminded of a brother in Christ – when he speaks (in preaching or conversation), he exudes a confidence in the Word of God that is uplifting and Godly counsel. I have been blessed to know such brothers in Christ over the years; these are sent by God to mentor younger believers – they are a blessing. But our scripture today speaks of another person; wisdom, who is described by Solomon as a fine lady of Godly character – it is she who speaks to us in the above verse.
Wisdom counsels us to seek her Godly attributes, which can only be sought by first fearing Almighty God, through regular prayer and meditation on Him and His Word (Psalm 110:10). The reverent fear of God and following the counsel of Godly wisdom guides us into a life of holiness, secure in His care and provision. This is the essence of today’s verse; if we listen to Godly wisdom, we will be secure in God and need not fear evil – He alone is our hope and security. Matthew Henry thus comments on this verse, “He shall be easy, and have no disquieting apprehensions of danger; he shall not only be safe from evil, but quiet from the fear of it.”
Dear Reader, if you would live securely in God’s care, free from the fear of evil, seek Godly wisdom. He who created us and redeems us by His Son is the source of Godly wisdom; “but if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).
