Here I am …

Abraham was true to his word and was willing to obey in faith.

Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

Genesis 22:1 (NASB)

How often in life friends come alongside us in times of need, and say “I am here for you” – these are comforting words indeed when you know from past experience the person really does mean it. A friend recently said this to Susan and me, and he has become a comfort to us in difficult times. Our verse today is similar, but on a different scale; it is the words of Abraham answering the call of God. He tests Abraham’s faith, calling Abraham to sacrifice his only son – I wonder if Abraham regretted his positive answer when he heard what God wanted. As we know, Abraham was true to his word and was willing to obey in faith. It is an inspiring account!

Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Isaiah 6:8

Another famous Biblical example is that of the prophet Isaiah, a youth compared to Abraham. He goes one step further saying “Send me!” volunteering for a specific task set by God.

Dear Reader, what about you – have you responded positively to God’s call recently? I spoke recently of times when I didn’t obey Him, but He kept asking by various sources until I relented and obeyed His call. Almighty God doesn’t accept it when we respond “Not right now!” rather than “Here I am Lord!”
