For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:21 (NASB1995)
Today’s verse is quite precious to me. It came to me in my devotions one morning while recovering after a brain tumour surgery. I meditated upon the verse for some time; it brought me indescribable peace in that time of uncertainty, whether I would live or die. The truth before me told me that whatever the outcome, I was safe in Christ’s care – worry was worthless!
F.B. Meyer describes death in this verse as
a loosing from anchorage so that the soul may go forth on the broad ocean of God’s love. It does not interrupt our conscious fellowship with the Lord. The moment of absence here is the moment of presence there. To die is therefore gain.”
Dear Reader, the truth of today’s verse is the greatest assurance we can hold onto regardless of our circumstances. In these words of Paul, we are gifted a generous measure of divine indifference towards our trials. May we grasp the awesome reality of our Father God’s grace in this provision!
