I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8 (NASB1995)
I was taking someone to Edinburgh Airport yesterday, not an everyday journey in my car, and certainly not a route I am familiar with. I could find my way to the airport, but I needed the services of Google Maps on my phone to direct my road home. Driving in the city is always an anxious experience for a country guy like me, especially when it is busy. Thus, trusting Google to direct me on unknown roads doesn’t come naturally. Eventually, I began to recognise some familiar roads as I got closer to the Forth Bridge, which would take me home to Fife. When I did get home, I settled down with a sigh of relief to enjoy a coffee. and thanked God for His travelling mercies.
This reminded me of several years ago when I bought our first SATNAV to guide me and my son to various chess tournaments around Scotland. We have come to a technology where such devices are obsolete now, being replaced by a mobile phone application. As I thought of this, I was reminded of the guidance system that is far superior to all others and will never become obsolete or surpassed. I am talking about the guidance of Father God in the lives of His children; His Spirit’s presence and His Word light up His divine direction for each day.
Dear Reader, there are different ways to read our verse today. It can be read as God speaking to us, which is the most common way to read it. It is often said by some to be the words of the psalmist, sharing the Godly wisdom and direction he has been blessed with over the years. Certainly, our Father God can guide us in many ways, as well as by the counsel of other Godly individuals – but we need to be seeking His guidance and open to it. Just as I followed my Google directions in unfamiliar territory, we must follow God’s divine directions in faith that He will guide us to our final destination.
