Confidence In God

Age isn’t the deciding factor in successful service, but rather that they are chosen and equipped by Almighty God.

Then I said, “Alas, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ Because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak.

Jeremiah 1:6-7 (NASB)

Yesterday I began reading Jeremiah in the Old Testament, where I was impressed by the appointment of Jeremiah at such a young age. There is much speculation as to how old he was. I have seen ages from 14 to 20 mentioned – all still young for the appointment of prophet of God. Yet this is not unique when we remember other young men like Samuel, David, Joseph and Timothy in the New Testament. Their age isn’t the deciding factor in their successful service, but rather the fact that they are chosen and equipped by Almighty God.

Jeremiah said, “I am a youth” as a reason he felt he was ill-equipped, but God said that “all I command you, you shall speak.” As a miner’s son who never made the best of school education, these verses lift my heart! When facing those of higher social standing, the young may be intimidated feeling inadequate, but Almighty God has that covered:

“DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM, FOR I AM WITH YOU TO DELIVER YOU,” DECLARES THE LORD.

Jeremiah 1:8

Dear Reader, the example of young Jeremiah is a reason to be encouraged to follow where God leads you today. Indeed the story of Jeremiah is an encouragement to us at any age; it is not our ability that matters, but rather the Might of our Father God. As He equipped Jeremiah to complete his service, He will also equip you in whatever He calls you to do for Him. You only need to trust and obey His calling!
