It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.
Genesis 9: 14 – 15 (NASB)
Promises mean a lot to me, it is all part of being an honorable individual in my opinion. This has been a part of who I am from my childhood; my dad instilled a strong sense of honor from my youngest years, and my word was always to be my bond. As the years passed I found myself in a small select group of friends who believed in the same values; these brothers are still my closest friends regardless of any miles between us. Today’s scripture, which I meditated upon recently, talks of promises and honor too. But these are not values of any man; they belong to Almighty God – the Holy One.
After the flood, we read about a new promise made by God to Noah and all creatures, a solemn covenant to be precise. It was more binding than any legal contract; it was signed by Noah’s obedience and the hand of Almighty God – an everlasting covenant. What is interesting about this covenant is that it has a regular reminder of it in the sky after every rain storm; the rainbow placed in the sky by God is a reminder of this covenant between God and the whole of His Creation. The reminder is not only for man but for God…not that He would ever forget – it is a sign of a promise kept and being kept every day.
Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;
Deuteronomy 7: 9 (NASB)
Dear Reader, if you are a Christian who believes in God as your Father and His Son Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you are covered by God’s promises too. He has promised that anyone who calls upon His name will be saved; that is an everlasting covenant with His children. There is another Judgement coming some day soon, and God doesn’t want any to perish – His Son is the only way to avoid that Judgement. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to add your name to God’s everlasting covenant.
