Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
John 15:4 (NASB)
Previously, we looked at “Abide with Me” as God’s call to us: today our Lord calls us to “Abide in Me” – a more intimate abiding. John 15:1-11 is a rich instruction from our Lord Jesus, spoken first to His disciples but also to us in later days. Our Lord declares at the outset that He is “The true Vine” and therefore we are the branches – we must be in Him to be fed that we may bear fruit of the Vine. We are called into divine communion with Him as a branch grafted into Him.
Grafting is an ancient technique of propagating healthy plants from a strong root; I remember watching my dad grafting young rose shoots into a strong rootstock, he would bind them together securely and the new shoot would grow producing flowers at the right time. This is the exactly same process our Lord spoke of in today’s scripture.
Dear Reader, are you abiding in Him – the true Vine? Are you in daily communion with your Lord, being fed from His Holy roots? May we abide in His love (verse 9) brethren, and bear much fruit for Him each day.
