You Can Overcome Anxiety: A Christian Perspective

Anxiety is a common problem that can be difficult to deal with, but it is possible to overcome it.

Anxiety is a common problem that affects people of all ages and backgrounds, including Christians. It can be difficult to deal with, but there are things we can do to overcome it. In this article, we will talk about how Christians can find freedom from anxiety.

 

What is Anxiety?
 
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. It is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. However, for some people, anxiety can become chronic and debilitating.
 
 
What Causes Anxiety?

There are many different things that can cause anxiety.7 Some of the most common causes include:

  • Stressful life events, such as job loss, financial problems, or relationship problems

  • Medical conditions, such as heart disease, thyroid problems, or cancer

  • Substance abuse, such as alcohol or drug use

  • Spiritual- dealing with a spirit of anxiety and/or fear

 

How Can Christians Overcome Anxiety?

There are several things that Christians can do to find freedom from anxiety. Using a multi-faceted approach, such as healing the mind, the body, and the spirit, works in overcoming anxiety.

 

Some of these include: 

  • Pray. Prayer is a powerful tool that can help us to connect with God and find peace. When we pray, we can ask God to help us overcome our anxiety and fear.

  • Read the Bible. The Bible is full of wisdom and encouragement that can help us to overcome anxiety. When we read the Bible, we can find verses that speak to our situation and give us hope. *Write out scriptures that pertain to anxiety on notecards and speak them out loud 3x per day, like you would take a prescription medication. Find scriptures at the end of the article that you can use.

  • Meditate on God’s Word. Meditation is the process of thinking deeply or focusing one’s mind for a period of time on a particular scripture(s).  When we meditate on God’s Word, we are allowing it to transform our thinking and help us to overcome anxiety.

  • Focus on God’s promises. God has made many promises to us in His Word. When we focus on these promises, we can find hope and peace in the midst of our anxiety.

  • Surround yourself with positive, faith-filled people. The people we spend time with can have a big impact on our mental and emotional health.19 When we surround ourselves with positive, faith-filled people, we are more likely to have a positive outlook on life.

  • Take care of yourself. When we are physically and emotionally healthy, we are better able to deal with anxiety. This means getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly.

  • Seek professional help. If our anxiety is severe or interfering with our daily lives, we may need to seek professional help from a therapist, life coach, or a deliverance minister. * I provide life coaching for women and can assist you in overcoming anxiety and getting you to a place of healing and wholeness in Christ.

  • Exercise, especially walking. Exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety. 

  • Consider alternative ways to heal your brain through herbs and supplements. **See the article at the end of this article on this topic.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit if you are dealing with a spirit of anxiety/fear. You may need to close some spiritual doors that have been opened, renounce any lies that you have believed, and take authority over this spirit in the name of Jesus. 

  • Take small steps in overcoming anxiety. In other words, if you have trouble leaving your home, try not to force yourself to be gone all day in your first attempt to leave your home, but instead leave for small periods, and use rewards as you accomplish your goals. Gradually build your way to being able to leave your home for extended periods of time.

  • Use journaling to write out all of your anxieties. Bringing them to the light means you are dealing with what is bothering you and not stuffing them down for any further anxiety. Whatever the Lord shows you, ask Him to heal any trauma or wounds that you have endured. *I provide email life coaching, share your story with me, and let’s work together to uncover any “root” cause of anxiety and bring you to a place of healing and freedom. 

Anxiety is a common problem that can be difficult to deal with, but it is possible to overcome it. Christians can find freedom from anxiety by using their faith and by taking steps to improve their mental and emotional health. 

 
Additional Tips for Christians Dealing with Anxiety
  • Remember that you are not alone. Many other Christians are also dealing with anxiety.

  • Focus on God’s promises. God promises to be with us and to give us peace.23

  • Practice self-care. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly.

  • Avoid triggers. Identify things that trigger your anxiety and try to avoid them.

  • Seek professional help if needed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a therapist or life coach.

     

Remember, you are not alone in this fight. God is with you, and there are people who care about you and want to help.

*Many scriptures offer comfort and guidance for those struggling with anxiety. Here are some of the most frequently cited and comforting verses:

Philippians 4:6-7:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV)

This passage encourages us to replace worry with prayer and gratitude, promising that God’s peace will protect us.

1 Peter 5:7:

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (NIV)

This verse emphasizes God’s personal concern for us and invites us to release our burdens to Him.

Matthew 6:34:

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (NIV)

This reminds us to focus on the present moment and trust God with the future.

Isaiah 41:10:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (NIV)

This verse provides assurance of God’s presence, strength, and support.

John 14:27:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (NIV)

Jesus offers a peace that surpasses worldly understanding, a peace that can calm our troubled hearts.

Psalm 55:22:

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (ESV)

This Psalm encourages us to give our burdens to God, trusting in His sustaining power.

These scriptures offer hope and practical guidance for dealing with anxiety. They remind us that we are not alone in our struggles and that God is always there to provide comfort and strength.
