John 1:1-5, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
Words surround us every day. We read words on cereal boxes, newspapers, road signs, and billboards. Wherever you turn you will find yourself reading words on something.
In the book of John, he tells us in John 1:1,” In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” What is he telling us?
The Greek meaning is ‘logos’ which relates to reasoning. John capitalizes Word relating to a person, and studies have shown us that John was referring to the Word, as Jesus. Let’s paraphrase this, keeping that in mind. ‘In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God.’
Now let’s let this sink in a little deeper. Remember logos means reasoning, and the Word is Jesus. So, Jesus is reasoning, He is meaning, He is logic. Jesus makes life make sense!
In Matthew, we read that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
I enjoy watching the lights flicker on candles. It’s as if the flame comes alive as soon as the match hits the wick. Have you had to use candles when your power goes out? It’s amazing how such a small light can light up a room of darkness, but the darkness can’t overcome the small light from the candle. Light is powerful and can even expose hidden things.
Now remember, Jesus is logic and reasoning. He is the Word that has been here since the beginning, with God. Yet, Jesus also came to this world to be a light in darkness. Yes, His light exposes sin, but He came to show so much more with His light. His light also shows us truth. God does not want us walking around in darkness, stumbling along the way. So, He gave us the Light to follow.
I’m teaching my kindergarteners how to read and how to recognize letters. At first, they looked at the words as a bunch of random letters that made no sense, but as they are learning they are now understanding. Each word has order and gives meaning.
So, it is with Jesus. When Jesus comes into our lives, His light helps us see His absolute truth, so we are not fooled by satan’s twisted distorted truth. Jesus is light and truth and His light clarifies what our eyes see. We can see who God is. To do this God sent Jesus as the Word who has been with God since the beginning. Who better to share who God is than someone who has been with Him since before the beginning? I’m not sure what brings meaning to your life right now, but I do know with Jesus in my life, my life has meaning and purpose, and my existence makes sense.
Let me tell you, the older I get the more I need more light to see words clearly, or to see objects on the road up ahead, especially in the dark. Like I need light to see more clearly, when we seek Jesus, the Word, and seek to know Him better we will begin to understand His truths and what He is teaching us. Every word in life, spoken or read, shares a thought, it is more than just random letters. Words spoken by Jesus or what we read in scripture are more than just random letters, they have meaning. Through these words we can know God so much better, and we are promised a life lived in Him.
For example, S, A, V, T, I, L, A, O, N has no meaning by itself, but when arranged as SALVATION our mind is taken to the hope of heaven and everlasting life with Jesus.
When we understand Jesus, the Word, the Light, and Truth, our life begins to find meaning and we begin to connect with our Savior in a personal way.
I read this from a devotional on creativebiblestudy.com. The word HUSH is just a random word, but they found a great acronym to fit what we’re reading about today.
H – Is for Him When we put Him (Jesus) first in our lives, He gives us that sweet “hush” of peace that all is well. It is also to remind us that He is the One that initiated it ALL! Just as in John 1:1 – He was in the beginning. All things were created by Him and for Him. The hope of salvation all began with Him.
U- Is for Us It is up to us to receive or reject His sweet “HUSH” of His peace. God chose to love us unconditionally. It is our choice to love Him back. Love isn’t love without a choice.
SH – Is for Seek Him Once we have accepted His gift of salvation, His gift of eternal life, it is only the beginning of this journey with Jesus. We must continue seeking Him daily, seeking His face & His presence. (Psalm 27:8) “Sh” is that sound made to a baby as they are rocked to sleep. It is that calming presence that speaks “all is well.”
As we see words all around us during the day and understand their meaning, let those remind us of Jesus, The Word, and how He can bring meaning and purpose to our lives. Let His light always show us the truth and help us to always know the path that God is leading us on.
Our lives can get pretty mixed up and a lot can happen but when we have Jesus in our lives and in our hearts, things make sense. Keep Jesus in your heart, mind, and soul.
As Christians, we know it is important to study scripture. I could go into countless benefits we gain from reading scripture. But we know them already, I’ve talked about them before. Today I want to answer one simple question. Why is God’s Word vital to our faith and life and how should that influence our study of Scripture?
God’s Word is living and active (Heb. 4:12). When you don’t feel like reading your Bible or you can’t see evidence that God’s Word is changing you, just trust that the Holy Spirit is faithful to work and bring life through the reading of God’s Word (John 6:63).
God’s Word reveals God’s heart to you. When you feel like you aren’t learning anything or finding the benefits you seek. Remember the Word of God was not primarily written to answer your questions or fix your problems—it was written to reveal the heart of God to you, to grow your intimacy with Him, and to deepen your faith (Rom. 10:17).
God’s Word is your very life (Deut. 32:47). When you are discouraged or your time in the Word feels stale or fruitless, keep digging in anyway. Immerse yourself in the Word. Even when the desire isn’t there, pursue God through His Word.
God wants you to know Him. He has made this possible by revealing Himself in Scripture. When you are diligent to prioritize His Word, He is faithful to meet you there.
