When Fickle Feelings Lead Us to a Faithful God

When we simply surrender our fickle feelings to Him, we can fully follow His faithful lead.

Let’s face it, feelings are fickle. On any given day, they can have us flying high or in the depths of despair. While our feelings are real, they are not always right. And if we let our feelings rule our wayward hearts and fuel our forward motion, they’ll likely lead us astray.

That’s why our focus must remain on the faithfulness of God and the steadfastness of His truth. Unlike our fickle feelings that change with the wind, God’s Word is true and verifiable again and again. His ways are higher and rise above even our flighty feelings.

We must maintain a high view of God to sustain a humble view of ourselves. We must put the faithfulness of His truth above and before the fickleness of our feelings. We must believe what His Word says about His holy, righteous, and unchanging character as it relates to our sinful, fickle, and forever changing nature. When we do, we can let Him lead us, and that frees us to simply follow, without fear, because He will never fail us.

He says He loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). He says He has a plan for us. (Jeremiah 29:11). He says He will never leave us (Hebrews 13:5). He says we are more than conquerors in Him (Romans 8:37).

But without Him, our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9), our own understanding leads us astray (Proverbs 3:5), and our way seems right, but ends in death (Proverbs 14:2)

When we simply surrender our fickle feelings to Him, we can fully follow His faithful lead.

He makes our paths straight (Proverbs 3:6). His way is the only way that leads to life everlasting (John 14:6). And He is patient with us in the process of trust (2 Peter 3:9).

So let’s put those feelings in their place today…behind the truth of God’s Word and our trust in that truth. It never changes and will always be found faithful, even when those fickle feelings try to lead us astray and tempt us to lose our way.

Fickle feelings can lead us to a faithful God when we surrender them to Him.

Feelings are fickle
And change like the wind
Blinding us to reality
As we focus only on them

Although feelings are real
They’re not always right
And when we let them lead
They sometimes cause a fight

So, let’s put them in their place
Again and again
Behind truth and trust
So right always wins

Because if we don’t
They’ll control us, too
Convincing us to believe
What never was true

Feelings are only indicators
So feel them and let them go
They should never be dictators
Allowed to run the show

Let’s take those fickle feelings
Trying to wreak havoc deep inside
And bring them into the light of truth
Where they can no longer hide

Silence the lies they whisper
By speaking what is true
The Gospel Truth, the very Word of God
Offering salvation to me and you

Salvation so sweet
It not only frees us from sin
But from those darn fickle feelings
That are always trying to win

Praise God for the imperfect process
Of growing in maturity
Where true beauty is born
From all those feelings of insecurity

So thank you, God, for our feelings
May they always lead us to you
And to the confidence waiting there
In the midst of all things true

About the Author

Tabitha is a southern girl at heart — born and raised in North Carolina but now happily rooted and established in Pennsylvania. A graduate of Meredith College with a degree in Mathematics, her life was transformed in college when she discovered what it meant to walk with Jesus daily through the ministry of CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). That same ministry introduced her to her husband, Steve, and together they’ve shared a lifelong passion for serving the Lord and encouraging others in their faith. They have four grown sons, one wonderful daughter-in-law, and a sweet pup named Rey who keeps life fun and full of energy. Tabitha loves God’s Word and the way it continues to transform hearts and lives. Whether she’s writing, teaching, or speaking, her greatest joy is helping women encounter the truth of Scripture and the love of Jesus. She considers it an incredible blessing to serve a God who continually teaches her even as she seeks to teach others. Her prayer is simple: to know Him more and to make Him known—at home, in her community, and wherever He calls her to go.
