The LORD’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NASB)
As I was studying these words of Jeremiah lamenting his hard life in the dark days of Israel’s rebellion against God, I was reminded of the darkness that was common in my early childhood – the UK experienced many power blackouts in the 1970s. We always managed in these hard times; everyone had candles and some means of heating water either by gas or on the coal fire, and the cards or dominoes would come out. We knew it was only a matter of time when the lights went back on, even if it was hours. It was a similar confidence that Jeremiah had in God, which encouraged him to write these famous words in our scripture today.
He knew that regardless of circumstances, God’s compassion would be seen eventually in His perfect timing – they just had to wait. And Jeremiah waited, sure that his hope in God would be rewarded for “the LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him” (Lam.3:24-25). Jeremiah had prayed, but now he waited “silently for the salvation of the LORD” (Lam.3:26) – assured that He had heard Jeremiah’s prayers, and salvation would come.
I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait,
And in His word do I hope.
Psalm 130:5
Dear Reader, are you waiting in the dark right now – overwhelmed by your circumstances? Don’t wait on the change to happen, wait on your Father God – He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). God is never MIA (missing in action), and neither are your prayers before Him – wait on Him, He will turn the lights back on in His perfect timing.
