Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Isaiah 6:8 (NASB)
I am always amazed at what Almighty God can do with the least likely people. It is not that I doubt Him, but that the works of His hands so often make the spectacular from the mundane. He takes the weak and makes them strong; I have witnessed this with folk I have known for years, God re-molds them to be effective servants for His Kingdom. It was precisely this that I found myself meditating upon recently in the beginning of Isaiah.
The young man Isaiah has a vision, whether asleep or awake and finds himself in the presence of a Heavenly host and the Almighty One. His reaction is one of unworthiness and humility.
Then I said,
“Woe is me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I live among a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”
Isaiah 6:5
Isaiah is in good company; in his encounter with God at the burning bush Moses was just as humble:
But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.”
Exodus 3:11-12
Jump forward to the New Testament, where we find that even Paul was a man of great humility before men and God:
To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,
Ephesians 3:8
Dear Reader, Isaiah, Moses, and Paul went on to serve God with great effect, despite their humility. The Almighty can use the least of us to serve His Kingdom, He fills the humble vessels in our world with boldness. You only need to submit as Isaiah did: “Here am I, send me!” and He will fill you.
