Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.
Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him.
JOB 13:15 (NKJV)
This morning my devotional time was interrupted by a raucous disturbance in our street. The cause was a wee lassie two doors away having a tantrum, “I don’t like school!” she screamed as she stamped her feet and crossed her arms in a purple rage on the doorstep. Mum was doing little to calm things by loudly laying down the law… but it was temporary, mum relented and the screaming stopped – the tantrum had worked. As silence returned to our small street, I pondered how the incident reflected our relationship with our Father God – do we throw unholy tantrums when things are not going our way?
Job gives us some useful advice in the above verse; rather than complaining, he chose the way of trust in God his Father – He knew better. The word “slay” used here is not a blood-curdling death but rather a temporary form of pain found in the trials of life; such as are allowed by a loving Father God who has our eternal end in His hands. In his own knowledge of this Job chooses to “trust” God. To trust (yâchal) in this verse means to wait/hope in God regardless of trials – it is to be anchored in the knowledge of His presence and provision being the right one.
Dear Reader, the last phrase is Job’s proclamation: “I will defend my own ways before Him” – that he would tell all who would listen that he loved, followed, and trusted God alone. Job certainly sets a good example for us in our walk with God; may we trust God today!
