The generous man will be prosperous,
And he who waters will himself be watered.
Proverbs 11:25 (NASB)
One of the many truths that I learned from my childhood is that poor people are more generous than the wealthy. I was raised in a working-class mining village where people looked after their neighbors and even those not in their street. In our village everyone knew who you were, and if you were in need or not. I remember folk sharing vegetables or even coal with each other; the best example of this was during the miner’s strike of the 1980s when there was real need in many homes.
Our verse today talks of the same idea, but from a Godly perspective. In His Word, God encourages His children to be generous with each other. God has a particular love for the poor and encourages us to do likewise. It is said in Proverbs 19:17 that anyone who gives to the poor lends to the LORD, and we know that God is no man’s debtor – He always rewards our generosity.
For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.
Hebrews 6:10
Dear Reader, may we use our Godly blessings wisely today – looking for opportunities to bless others who are in need. In sharing food, water, or money, we are sharing the love of God and the reality of the Gospel of Redemption. Our Father smiles upon such true giving.
Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
Luke 6:38
