The Surrendered Heart

It was clear every believer involved was moved in their heart, and the Holy Spirit was present in great power.

One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Matthew 22:35-37 (NASB1995)

Recently, I underwent an unexpected cognitive examination by my family doctor at the request of the DVLA (the agency that issues UK driving licences). I drive under a temporary medical driving licence, which is renewed every three years. The good news is that I passed the examination with a score of 100% – it’s back to the drawing board for the DVLA… I am of sound mind. I share this because I have been pondering the contrast between the mind and the heart with regards to faith in God – the Almighty, requires more than a sound mind in our faith.

I listened to an old testimony by Duncan Campbell, the evangelist/preacher who was instrumental in the Hebridean Revival (1949-1952). What struck me by the service as I listened to it was the fervour/power in the man of God’s speech, and in the responses of his listeners with many exhortations of “hallelujah!” or “amen!” It was clear every believer involved was moved in their heart, and the Holy Spirit was present in great power.

Dear Reader, what a contrast we see between those moved by the Almighty in their hearts and those who have Him in their mind. We see this displayed in many churches that have plenty of members but very little heartfelt love of God and His Word. The truth of God and the gospel may make sense to our brain, but it is only when we admit Him into our heart that His Spirit can work in and through us. Take note of our Lord’s words in our verse today: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ The Almighty wants more than your mind; He wants all of you.
