O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD,
Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.
Psalm 95:1 (NASB)
I was blessed by the song “I Go To The Rock” by the Gaither Homecoming Friends last night. It reminded me of that special joy that can only be found in our Lord Jesus, God His Father, and our Father too. In the world, it is easy to be joyful when things go well, but when all is not well joy is the last thing on our mind. But as children of God, His Word in verses such as Psalm 95:1 calls us into the joy of His presence, regardless of what our pain or sorrow may be – that requires a special kind of strength and faith.
Reading the verse above we see two commands and one LORD, and a further description of His purpose to us. We are beckoned to “sing for joy” – to fill our hearts with joyful remembrance of His love and provision. It is a heartfelt joy, and not from the voice box Jesusalone. We are further called to “shout joyfully” – this is not the shout of mirth, but the battle cry of expectant victory by God’s hand. Finally, our LORD is ascribed as “the rock of our salvation” – He will (not may!) save us and be our refuge in whatever storm we are in the midst of.
Dear Reader, the fruit of such reliance upon the Almighty is holy joy – the knowledge of our promised salvation cheers even for the breaking heart. These are not empty words to me; I know these battles intimately and have lent upon my LORD on each occasion – there is no one else that I would rather lean on…what about you?
