The Righteous Walk

He who delights in the Law of the LORD continually is prepared to stand for God in the world.

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2 (NASB)

Reading the first psalm is like visiting with an old friend that you haven’t seen for a while; it and the rest of the psalms are comforting as well as being instructive. Just like the long missed friend when we re-unite with them, this psalm is familiar, but then there is always something new, which thrills the heart.

The first psalm is a contrast between the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked; between the child of God and those who choose the way of the world. We see the well-known downward progression into sin; walking with the godless, standing with them, and then the settled position of sitting in their godless company.

Read today’s verses carefully, and you will see a divine circular lifestyle. The righteous child of God who delights in the Law (Word) of the LORD continually is prepared to stand for God in the world. This is why he is so blessed; he is already armed and ready with God’s Word. This is why the psalmist states that meditation is “day and night” – the man/woman of God needs the Word every day and all day, 24/7.

Dear Reader, to fulfill the first verse in our righteous walk with God, we must first fulfill the second verse. How is your righteous walk with God today?
