“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
And whose trust is the LORD.
For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NASB)
Today’s scripture is part of a contrast within Jeremiah 17, between those who trust in man and those who trust in God. Those who desert God will be punished, losing their wealth, home, and maybe even their life. The wicked are likened to a bush struggling in a dry desert (verses 5-6). But then we have the reward for those who remain faithful to God – what a lovely message we read in today’s verses.
Jeremiah writes today’s scripture for those in the kingdom of Judea who had rebelled against God and His Word, but there was a small number who were faithful. The faithful were likened to trees with their roots sank deep by a refreshing stream – an illustration of God’s Word. In His Word, they will remain healthy and fruitful, even in time of spiritual drought in their nation.
Dear Reader, if you are a faithful child of God regularly slaking your spiritual thirst in His Word, today’s scripture applies to you today. We live in times of great wickedness and spiritual drought, where many are drinking from every dirty water hole they can find in their desperation – if only they knew where to find living water! In our Father God’s fresh streams of Righteousness, we flourish and are rewarded daily. May we share this Good News today!
