The rainbow was never meant to be a sign supporting and affirming sexual perversion. The rainbow was a sign from God that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood. The symbol and its meaning have been hijacked and used to affirm evil.
A rainbow is not something the Church should promote, celebrate, or advertise, attempting to gain acceptance from those who live under its hijacked purpose. Our love for people has to be based on God’s truth, not on a misdirected interpretation of His love.
There was a reason why the Lord sent flood waters upon the earth: “The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So, the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart” (Genesis 6:5-6).
When Noah, his sons, and wives had survived the flood, the Lord sent a sign to the survivors, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life” (Genesis 9:12-15). The sign of a rainbow was a sign of God’s covenant for all generations to come, even in our generation.
In our current context, when a believer displays a rainbow without clarification of the permissive evil behind its current demonstration, it transmits a wrong message of acceptance of that lifestyle without providing clarification and the original purpose of the rainbow.
God is a redeemer of all things. The very reason why God sent the flood was because the evil that was taking place on earth broke His heart. Only Jesus can redeem a person bound up in evil, not our anger or disgust at such evil.
Our faith and its expression must be motivated by God’s heart, not our emotions. We need to express the reason why using a rainbow to support evil is itself evil, even when it’s done in ignorance.
The Church has been called to align with God’s heart, not a hijacked expression of His love that cannot redeem a person from the sin that has entangled their lives and holds them captive to deception. That kind of clarification is a challenge when, like in the time of Noah, the extent of human wickedness is increasing upon the earth. Only a clear and loving expression of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ can change the course of human history. All other attempts will ultimately fail.
