Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel. But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. Then the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
Jeremiah 18:3-6 (NASB)
Today’s scripture from Jeremiah is a practical lesson from the Almighty to Jeremiah for those whom Jeremiah is to address. It is not the only time God demonstrates the meaning of His message in such a practical way; in Jeremiah 13:1-11, a waistband is used to demonstrate the value of closeness to God for His children and the danger of separation from Him. As we read the story of the spoiled clay pot on the potter’s wheel, we can also see the application of it in our lives just as Jeremiah saw all those years ago.
As well as whole nations God deals with individuals too; after all, He is the One who knows the needs of every sparrow and the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:29-30). He is the Master of the large and the small. We look back on our lives, some memories are painful, and others we would rather forget. But all these are turns on our Potter’s wheel, where He shapes and molds us in His chosen image. The Potter’s craft is a time-consuming process that is always done in His perfect time.
Dear Reader, the pain of your life is only a temporary circumstance – trust the Master Potter. None of us are perfect on this side of Heaven, but the Master Potter holds us gently in His hands. In Him, we are being molded for our Heavenly home in glory.
