The Old Testament prophecy and promise, which was spoken to God’s people in Micah 5:2, was made by way of the greatest miracle that has ever taken place in Luke 2, when Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. I have contemplated this question as I’ve meditated on the fulfilled promise and miracle that God orchestrated:
What does it look like to have God’s promises fulfilled and see miracles take place in our lives today?
An example of a fulfilled promise that was made by way of a miracle in my life is the birth of our daughter. Growing up, I was abused mentally, spiritually, emotionally, etc. I was on a walk one day in my early twenties, processing events that took place in my childhood. That day, I asked the Lord if He would give me a little girl someday. I wanted the opportunity to nurture her and treat her differently. After I prayed, I felt a firm conviction that He had heard me and would give me a daughter. Years later, when I was pregnant with our first child, I fully expected a girl.
When we found out the baby was a boy, we were happy of course. I thanked the Lord and kindly reminded Him of the promise He made me. I confidently assumed that we would have a girl on our next go-around. The second time around we found out the baby was a boy. We were happy of course, and at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel some disappointment. Our plan was to have two children.
I felt let down by God and doubted He had heard my prayer. The “promise” I thought He had given me felt completely made up from my end.
One thing I’ve discovered about God is that sometimes His plans don’t match up with ours. Oftentimes, they are better. Ten months after I gave birth to our second son, I gave birth to our little girl. A miracle occurred, and it was immeasurably more than I could have ever asked for or imagined.
