Measuring our Worth

The truth is, the cross measures our value, and we are all the same at the foot of it.

Within our society, our inherent worth seems to be measured by our occupation, net worth, education, outward beauty, social status, accomplishments, or even the value we add to the world. But are these true measuring rods?

Don’t get me wrong, maintaining a reputable occupation, owning nice things, or having attractive features are all good. However, we get caught up all too often in believing the lie that our worth is measured by what we do to earn or deserve it.  Sometimes we may even gauge our worth on what others are doing compared to ourselves. The truth is, the cross measures our value, and we are all the same at the foot of it.  Our worth comes from God alone and not anything else.

Jesus demonstrated how much we are worth by giving up His own life, dying on the cross, to save ours.  In John 3:16 NIV we read, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We have done nothing to earn or deserve our worth.  It was given to us by God.  We are infinitely valuable to Him because of the price He paid to make us worthy.  Each of us is equal to the next person, regardless of occupation, net worth, BMI, or education, because He created all of us and died for all of us.  Genesis 1:27 NIV reads, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” We can grow in our relationship with others when we realize we are all valuable because of the cross, and we possess immense worth through the eyes of our Creator.

Everything that God, the Great Artist, does is breathtaking, including His creating you. Psalm 139:14 NIV reads, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.”  He embroidered you with great skill, and made you so mysteriously complex, skillfully shaping you from nothing into something.  He planned out your days, and every single one of them was written in His book before any of them came into existence.  He cherishes you in His every thought, and you are immensely valuable to Him.

Have you ever gotten caught up in believing the lie that your worth is measured by what you do to earn or deserve it? Have you ever measured your value based on comparisons you’ve made to the people around you? What is one thing you can do today to let go of a lie you’ve believed or a comparison you’ve made and embrace what God says about it?

Lord Jesus, thank You for making me worthy and valuable in Your eyes.  Thank You for valuing me so much that You died on the cross for me.  Would you please help me remember that my worth comes from You and not anyone else?  Amen.
