The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Yesterday I was reading Psalm 19. I was especially touched by verses 7 through 11, which speak of the many benefits of God’s Word; it could almost be a part of that most famous psalm about the Word of God – psalm 119. As I read today’s verse more closely the phrase saying that His Law is “restoring the soul” reminded me of old medicine. We all remember those weekly doses of cod liver oil dispensed by mum; little did we know it was for our own good. The Word of God is the best medicine for our soul, restoring us from a sinful past.
When the psalmist says, “The law of the Lord is perfect,” he is saying it is whole, truthful, and without fault. It has no additives other than what God has put in it. When the Word of God “restores our soul,” it turns us back, converting (as the KJV says) us from what sin ails us. The Word cleans house in our souls, making us ready for God’s plans. Through it, He builds us up, taking worldly wisdom and replacing it with Eternal wisdom in all its simplicity.
Dear reader, are you standing steadfast in God’s Word today? Are you partaking regular doses of The Master’s Medicine every day, fortifying your soul that it may stand until He calls you home? This world is full of alternative medicines and therapies, but only one can be relied upon to work for our soul – the Holy Word of God.
