No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
Luke 11:33 (NASB)
There is nothing quite as beautiful as a sunrise, going from darkness into gloriously warm light. It is both a physical and a spiritual experience that lifts the heart. In my point of view, one of the most lovely names for our Lord Jesus is “The Light of The World” – one better than a thousand sunrises!
Our verse today comes from a time when Jesus was accused of working by Satan, the angel of darkness. Wicked men sought a sign from Him to disprove their accusations, but He denied them, saying that only the sign of Jonah would be seen. Jonah preached the light of God to the Ninevites of Assyria, bringing redemption to the whole city. Jesus preached the light of God to His present generation, saving many – that His disciples may also share God’s light of redemption then, and also us today. Thus, it is appropriate that our Lord goes on to speak of sharing the light in today’s verse.
Dear Reader, if you have received the Light of Christ, are you sharing it? Is our lamp prominent in our life, that all who enter our home or whom we meet in the street, will see His Light shining through us?
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
