The Father’s Favor

God’s blessings still followed Joseph to prison.

But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.

Genesis 39:21 (NASB)

One of the most inspiring parts of Joseph’s story, beginning in Genesis 39, is how God blessed him regardless of how bad his circumstances in life were. He was sold as a slave in Egypt to an officer of Pharoah’s royal court, who recognised him as a man of God upon whom God blessed. Thus, he made Joseph overseer of his whole household. But when things went wrong, and Joseph was jailed on the basis of a lie by Potiphar’s adulterous wife, God’s blessings still followed Joseph to prison.

The favor of God followed Joseph from his homeland to Egypt, to the home of a senior officer of Pharaoh, prison, and then to stand before Pharaoh himself. After the king, Joseph was the most powerful man in Egypt because God gave him favor before men. The reason for this can be seen in Genesis 41 when Pharaoh asked him to interpret his dreams, and Joseph answered  “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favourable answer.” (Genesis 41:16). Joseph gave all the glory to God for the answer to Pharaoh’s dreams, and in all matters he undertook – God honors such faithfulness by His children.

Dear Reader, may we learn from the faithfulness of Joseph and also be found faithful before those who are in our lives. Our Father God is the supreme example of faithfulness; “extending kindness and favour” on those who are faithful to Him, giving all glory to Him before those we meet.
