And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
Matthew 19:29 (NASB1995)
In today’s scripture, we read the Lord’s answer to what was a bold question by Peter, who had asked in verse 27, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” I can imagine the stunned look on those who were present, but the reality is that Peter is asking what any believer wants to know. There have been times when I have reflected upon the cost of following God. My faith cost me my family on my sister’s side many years ago, and also a connection with some who hold to a stricter religion. These are the things that come to my memory when I read our verse today.
The promises of our Lord to fill the empty space in my life are such a comfort to me. It reminds me of one of my favourite psalms and this particular verse, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19). If we are faithful servants of the Lord, He will care for us in our needs and afflictions – He is faithful too!
Dear Reader, as children of God and servants of His Son, we can rest assured in the ultimate words of our Lord when we reach the Gloryland: ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ (Matthew 25:21). Whatever our faith in God costs us in this world will surely be repaid gloriously in Heaven!
