Years ago we used to sing a song over and over again with these words. “I have a new song, a new song in my heart today. I have a new song, a new song, glory all the way. Hallelujah, hallelujah praise him all day long. He saved me and gave me a new, new song.” Are you ready to sing a new song to the Lord?
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. Psalm 149:1
My wife loves to hold our grandchildren and sing songs to them, about them. She has this unique talent to make up songs as they sit on her lap. They love when she does it because each song is just for them. Is that what God is wanting us to do in this verse?
Maybe you have the mindset that you could never do anything like that. Or you could be admitting to yourself that you can’t sing a lick. That’s ok though because, in Psalm 100, the first two verses say to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Some of the newer translations use the words, shout to the Lord with joy.
Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Psalm 100:1-2
Praise Him In the Assembly
The second half of our verse for today says, Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. In our context that would be singing in church with other believers. With that in mind, we can’t all be singing our own thing. So let me tell you my thoughts about singing a new song.
While worshiping in church or even by myself, I can be singing a song that is well known to me. Yet for some reason it has taken a new meaning as I am lifting it up to the Lord. I am worshiping differently even though I’m singing a familiar song.
When you are involved in congregational singing. Whether it’s out of the hymnal or from a screen, allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you. Let each song become a new worship experience. Like the Psalmist said, worship the Lord with gladness.
However, too many times we don’t have a new song. You see, a new song begins in your heart and it’s focused right towards God. The reason we don’t often have one is that we are too consumed with other things.
In church, we could get hung up on how the song is being led. Either by the worship leader or the organist. We could be distracted by something that’s going on in our lives. Or our thinking might be centered on ourselves and we just don’t feel like singing or worshiping.
There is nowhere in the Bible that says you only need to worship God when you feel like it. Listen to what the Psalmist wrote.
Sing to the Lord a New Song Because of His Unfailing Love Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm 100:4-5
If His unfailing love continues forever, then shouldn’t we all the more praise Him? Especially, when we don’t feel like it. We must learn that praise and worship aren’t about us, but it’s all about Him. Then singing a new song to the Lord will be motivated by the wonderful things that God has done.
Sing a new song, one that brings glory to God. Sing a new song for the promises he has given and will keep. Offer Him a new song because everything He does is wonderful.
Lord, whether we are singing old lyrics or straight from our hearts. With each song give us a new worship experience.
