Serving Until The End

However long we live, it is a gift of God for faithfulness, and that we may live with purpose  – serving Him.

You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.
Deuteronomy 5:33 (NASB)

In recent days I have been pondering life and in particular the length of it; some of us will reach an average age while others may live a long life. When I read today’s verse I saw that however long we live, it is a gift of God for faithfulness, and that we may live with purpose  – serving Him. This scripture comes after the people of Israel are presented with the commandments by Moses, and they choose to obey them and the God who gave them. They surrender to God’s will through Moses His mediator, and God is pleased.

The Israelites had been awakened to their sinful nature and unworthiness before a Holy God by the trials in the wilderness, which is why they needed a mediator. It could be suggested that in this account we see an early type of Christ our Mediator, whom we are awakened to through our own trials.

Dear Reader, as believers in Christ our Lord and Saviour, we live each day not just in service of God, but also in preparation for the promised hills of Heaven. Our lives serve His eternal purpose; with an assurance of a blessed ending. We see this in the lives of Zacharias and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist; “they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord“ (Luke 1:5-6). They served God faithfully achieving His purpose, and went into glory knowing they had done so.
