not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9
In this world, everyone has to deal with all types of people. While the majority of people will treat others decently, there are some who will not be kind. Learning how to deal with difficult people is a challenge for most people. Getting back at a person in the same way that one was treated is often the first action that a person has.
Peter tells the people that when someone does evil to them, they are not to return evil but rather pour out blessings upon them. This is done so that they can also receive a blessing.
The world is always focused on looking out for self. If someone treats self badly, then that person must be treated badly. Anger runs very high among people. Everyone is angry at everyone because everyone is angry at everyone.
No one wants their “rights” stepped on and back down from being angry. As a result, violence and anger are common reactions in this world and can be seen everywhere.
God wants His people to act differently than the world. He gave the example of Jesus being willing to love and forgive those who severely beat Him and put Him upon the cross. As He hung there, He asked the Father to forgive the people. He returned blessing for evil.
Rather than being like the world and returning a curse, believers are to pour out blessings upon those who have done wrong to them. They are to build up, not tear down. Being filled with and showing the love of Christ will give the believer strength to pour out blessings who have done them wrong. In this way, some may come to know Jesus and change their ways.
There will always be someone who will treat you badly, in an evil way. As that occurs, you have a choice to make as to how you will deal with that person. Do not be like the world and return evil for evil. It only brings you down to their level. Instead, pour out blessings upon them. Show them the love God has shown you in forgiving you. As you bless them, God can bless you because you are doing His will and being His witness.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will give you strength to be a blessing to those who harm you; that you will know what Jesus did for you on the cross; and that God will fill your life with His blessings.
