Purge Old Leaven

Begin with your own life and inspect it for any old leaven that needs to be cast out.

Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. 2 Corinthians 5:7

In order to get bread to rise, one must put some leaven or yeast into the dough prior to baking it. Once the yeast is put in, then it will rise. After baking the bread, new yeast must be used in order to make another new loaf of bread. It can no longer be used a second time; it is now dead and useless. Not using yeast, will keep the bread from rising, which can be useful for making various flatbreads.

Paul was talking to the Corinthians about a man living in sin in the church. He then tells them to purge the old leaven to become new and be truly unleavened.

Sinful activities are something that occurs everywhere a person may look. There is no place on the planet in which sin does not exist on and off.

Without following the standard of God, the world allows for and promotes sin as good. The church, on the other hand, is supposed to be led by God and His Holy Spirit in how to live a holy and righteous life.

While no church is completely free of sin, no church should have it openly promoted as good or turn a blind eye to blatant sin. There are churches that ignore blatant sin in the lives of their members and leaders.

Believers are to purge old leaven, the old sin in their own lives and in the church. As believers purge out sin, they become a new creation in Christ Jesus. They are then able to rise up in Christ and be the witness that they are called to be and build their relationship with God more and more, but individually and as a church body.

Finding sin in your own life or in the church you attend should be something that should become harder and harder to do. Sin should be old leaven that is no longer needed or desired. Begin with your own life and inspect it for any old leaven that needs to be cast out. Then as you grow, help lead others in getting rid of leaven in their own lives. Be the starting example of this in your church as you spread His gospel message as a new creation in Christ Jesus.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal any old leaven in your life; that God will open your eyes to leaven in your church; and that God will give you strength in casting out leaven in your life to make you a new creation.
