Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 3:1-2 (NASB1995)
I do find it hard to choose a stand-out scripture in each chapter, but I am sure that beginning in prayer is the right way to go – the Holy Spirit guides my choice. I chose today’s verse because it is a favourite; it stands out as a pertinent gospel message for today, as well as when it was first preached by John the Baptist – the Kingdom of heaven is still at hand.
“Now in those days” was specific to the time then; it could easily be “now in [these] days” and rather than John, it could be us who are preaching in the wilderness of this world. Paul tells us that “behold, now is the day of salvation” (2Cor.6:2). We see in verse three that John was chosen for his time; we could be chosen for today to share the Good News.
Look at the three noteworthy points about John. First, he came as commanded. Second, he preached where he was sent. Third, he preached the message that he was given. Thus, he was obedient to God’s call on his life.
Dear Reader, we see the continued importance of the message in that our Lord Jesus preached it and taught His disciples to preach it also. Will you share this Good News message today with those you meet? May the Holy Spirit guide you in this, brethren.
