Renee Leonard Kennedy is an author, speaker, and co-host of the MoralTea podcast. Her nonfiction, general market book, After the Flowers Die, offers the encouragement needed for the long haul after loss.

Renee conveys a message of grace for those who struggle repeatedly with worrisome thoughts. She shares personal stories from her life and how she has overcome what-if patterns. 

Kennedy offers the following tips to stomp out what-if thoughts:

  • Journal your thoughts and feelings. Revisit journal entries to recognize how things you feared in the past worked out.
  • Talk to others about your thought battles and concerns. Find healthy people who will listen well and offer helpful guidance.

We discuss the fear of the unknown and our unhealthy attempts to predict the worst future scenarios. 

Kennedy recounts an incident when a giant oak tree fell on her house and crushed the chair in which she’d been sitting only moments earlier. 

We discuss the scriptural context of overcoming what-ifs and worries. What are we afraid of that we believe God can’t handle?

Renee describes what-ifs as mind-clogging. We can not perceive God’s presence or blessings when focused on anxious thoughts. 

Kennedy points out that negative emotions affect our physical well-being.
