FLOURISH-MEANT
PODCAST
HOST: TINA YEAGER
How can we center our calling and pursue true, lasting fulfillment? Today’s guest, media host and ministry leader Rebecca George, offers the keys to setting a firm foundation and discerning our best steps in life.
Rebecca is the founder and visionary of Radical Radiance® – a podcast community where listeners are equipped to blend what they love with the Jesus who makes them shine. She is a podcaster, speaker, writer, and certified career coach whose greatest joy in life is discipling others to pursue their passions in a way that builds the Kingdom.
George recounts her personal journey to discover her calling. After her mother’s breast cancer battle, Rebecca started a ministry to oncology patients. During ensuing speaking engagements, many women approached her and described common obstacles holding them back from pursuing their dreams. Rebecca felt led to write a guide to help women overcome their roadblocks and live in their purpose.
Common obstacles to our purpose include:
- comparison
- doubt
- fear
George reveals that the root of all these roadblocks is a belief that doesn’t line up with Scripture. She advises us to ask God to help us remember the truth. We must depend upon Him to equip us. She emphasizes remaining vigilant. In each struggle with an obstacle, we can turn to God.
Rebecca refers to the Garden of Eden and notes how we struggle with similar questions faced by Adam and Eve during their moment of temptation. We can learn to recognize those old questions. We may also keep in mind that we’re not alone in our struggles. We all face moments like these.
We discuss transparency during our trials. In the context of healthy Christian fellowship, we can experience great benefit from asking others for prayer.
Rebecca debunks the myth that it can be comfortable and cozy in our calling.
George shares an exercise to help us discover our God-given calling. She encourages women to create a Venn diagram to examine the overlap between three areas:
- what matters to you
- what matters to God
- what matters to others
Rebecca also advises us to consider where our spiritual gifts fit into the overlapping center of these areas. She states that this helps point us toward a mission that isn’t simply centered on selfish ambition, but is instead a God-centered calling.
When facing a “wall” in our calling, we can consider the following:
- We all have those moments.
- Examine your capacity.
- Ask God if this is a moment for endurance.
- Inspect your foundation.
- Remember who you’re serving.
- Keep in mind that you carry the Holy Spirit within you.
- The power to finish well is all up to God.
Rebecca reminds us that the outcome is God’s. Obedience is ours.
We need to remember our limits. She warns against striving. George encourages us to prayerfully ask what faithfulness looks like in this season. We need to walk through the heart-work in prayer to determine the next steps in our calling.
When facing seasons when you cannot see results, Rebecca advises working on a hobby or short-form project you can finish to help you cope (e.g. crafts). She notes that when we work with our minds, we should rest with our hands. Ministry work can be a long game.
We discuss the therapeutic nature of creative play as well as taking time to celebrate who God is. Recognize that calling is a journey that changes from season to season.
