Not Being Ready

Each day you have things that strive to draw your attention away from things that are important.

But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. Luke 21:34

Having a sudden unexpected visitor throws a lot of people into a panic. They fear people popping in without notice because they do not have time to straighten up their home and make it presentable for guests. Many like to know ahead of time that someone is coming and then try to remember that and be ready when the time comes. Sometimes they get overwhelmed with other things and forget about the coming arrival.

Luke records Jesus talking about His return. He warns them to watch themselves so that they do not get caught up in partying, getting drunk or the cares of life and that Day catches them unexpectedly.

It is common for people to put dates and times of events that are coming up on their phones with reminders. They do not want to forget about or miss important events. Without reminders, it is easy to forget about something that is going to happen.

Even with phone reminders, things can easily be missed with how one lives life. While going out and partying, one gets caught up in the joy of the moment and forgets other important times. Others will get themselves drunk on alcohol, drowning out the cares of life, thus missing important events.

The next greatest event to come is when Jesus returns to end all sin forever and take His people home to heaven. Many in this world who claim to believe in Him will miss that event as they are out just partying, getting drunk, and getting caught up in the day-to-day cares.

Believers need to be watching and keep their hearts ready for His return and not be caught unexpectedly.

Each day you have things that strive to draw your attention away from things that are important. It is easy to miss an appointment if you are not careful and watchful. Just as normal appointments are important to you, the return of Christ should be extremely important.

In the same way that you would want to be ready for someone to show up, keep yourself ready for His return. Do not get caught up in sin and the cares of this life and miss His return. Live your life for God in holiness and righteousness as you watch for His return.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will always be ready for the return of Jesus; that you will watch for His return; that God will reveal areas that are consuming your life and pulling your attention away from Him; and that His return will not catch you unexpectedly.
