And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28 (NASB)
Today’s devotional came from a recent reading in “Streams In The Desert” by Mrs Charles Cowman, in which she highlighted the purpose of manufactured things such as ships, swords, and footwear. These all need to be made to specific details to withstand the conditions in which they will be used – they must be fit for purpose. I pondered this and came to think of the purpose that we serve in life; especially the purpose of the Christian in God’s plans.
This led me to our verse today, a familiar verse to many of us. It is indeed encouraging to “know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God,” – no matter what life throws at us God is in control. But it is the second phrase I want to focus on: “to those who are called according to His purpose.” in which we find our key word, purpose. It is not just anyone’s purpose…it is the purpose of Almighty God, in and through our lives. The word purpose comes from the Greek prothesis, which is a plan of action by someone; in this case God’s Divine plans regarding those who are born again into His family via His Son Jesus Christ. There is nothing haphazard or random in the life of the child of God; all is as He intended it to be.
Dear Reader, as I further meditated upon this amazing divine truth, I was reminded of my own life and how God has planned it. From my Christian family roots, my love for reading (and then writing), which came from illness and convalescence. He also controlled my geographical location so that I would then hear and accept the Gospel of Truth when I did. These are the highlights of God’s plan in my life that bring me to write and share with you today, and He isn’t finished with me yet. What purposes has God shown you in your life; where is He leading you today?
