Living in Wisdom
Have you ever known a know-it-all? Maybe they thought they knew it all, but their pride and self-righteousness revealed that they surely didn’t. In conclusion, just having knowledge doesn’t mean we are wise. Ultimately, Wisdom is knowledge applied. Consequently, those who know anything in this life realize they don’t know anything. Living in wisdom helps us to truly be wise.
Bible Reading of the Day: Proverbs 24-25
Solomon has some truths for us to chew on about wisdom—I know, this is not surprising, given he was a wise guy. But in Proverbs 24-25 Solomon wants us to grab a hold of wisdom and live by it – not just know about it.
Proverbs 24:3-7
“A house is built by wisdom, and it is established by understanding; 4 by knowledge the rooms are filled with every precious and beautiful treasure. 5 A wise warrior is better than a strong one, and a man of knowledge than one of strength; 6 for you should wage war with sound guidance—victory comes with many counselors. 7 Wisdom is inaccessible to a fool; he does not open his mouth at the city gate.”
Living in Wisdom—Ask for Wisdom
A fool does not see his need for wisdom. And those who ask for wisdom will find it, but they become wise as they don’t just seek after knowledge, but for wisdom to understand that knowledge and to live by it.
Friends, we are living in difficult times. Therefore, it can be easy to do nothing. The problems are overwhelming. But if we do nothing, we will be accountable to God for what we knew and understood but did not apply.
Proverbs 24:10-11
“10 If you do nothing in a difficult time, your strength is limited. 11 Rescue those being taken off to death, and save those stumbling toward slaughter.”
I saw a post today about the silent majority. Friends, we are often silenced (we being conservatives), because of some lame excuse like we can’t discuss politics. Honestly, I would rather talk about our need of Jesus than politics, but when our society has gone amok, we need to do something about it.
Scripture of the Day: Proverbs 24:12
“Don’t excuse yourself by saying, “Look, we didn’t know.” For God understands all hearts, and he sees you. He who guards your soul knows you knew. He will repay all people as their actions deserve.”
And according to our lack of actions. Simply, we need to speak the truth and the wisdom that we have acquired, we need to share with others.
Proverbs 24:14
“Realize that wisdom is the same for you. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will never fade.”
So how do we live wisely? Proverbs 24
- Don’t seek vengeance (:15, :29)
- Don’t gloat when your enemy falls. (:17)
- And don’t be agitated by the evildoers (:19)
- Additionally, don’t show partiality in judgment, (:23)
- Do fear the LORD (:21)
- Do convict the guilty (:25)
- Finally, do be honest (:26)
Living in Wisdom—Imparting Wisdom
Similar to Proverbs 24, Proverbs 25 has principles to also to help us live wisely with others and how to impart that wisdom to them.
“11 A word spoken at the right time is like gold apples in silver settings. 12 A wise correction to a receptive ear is like a gold ring or an ornament of gold.” 20 Singing songs to a troubled heart is like taking off clothing on a cold day or like pouring vinegar on soda. 21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, 22 for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.
26 A righteous person who yields to the wicked is like a muddied spring or a polluted well. 27 It is not good to eat too much honey or to seek glory after glory. 28 A person who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down.”
Application
- Living wisely gives us an understanding in our relationships.
- Living wisely is walking through this life humbly, realizing how much we truly don’t know.
- Just having knowledge doesn’t mean we are wise.
- Wisdom is knowledge applied.
