Have you stepped out in faith or are you being asked to step out into what seems impossible? And are there strong winds and waves upon the very place that God is asking you to walk? If so, this is for you.
Matthew 14:25-33
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Life can unleash fierce storms against you that cause you to feel that your very existence is threatened. It can feel as though you will lose everything amid the unrelenting waves that pound against all that you’ve worked so hard for. But there is good news— Jesus is walking upon the waves of that storm! They are under His feet.
I love that in Matthew 14 we see how Peter has so much faith in Jesus that he says,
“If it is you; call me to come to you.”
He knows that his Lord is the only one who can enable him to walk upon the very storm that is already under his feet. Yet, when he steps out in faith the force of the storm becomes far too real for Peter’s soul. The fear causes him to take his eyes off of the One who is before him and he allows that fear to infiltrate his faith; causing him to sink.
You may have experienced Jesus calling you to step out in faith and found that your first step of faith quickly turned to fear and doubt. You felt the wind and waves beneath your feet and now fear causing you to sink. But remember, when Peter began to sink, Jesus grabbed his hand and lifted him back up— back up upon the water and back up into his faith.
If you feel yourself sinking beneath the waves and being tossed by the winds, know that Jesus is reaching out and grabbing your hand to save you! He will lift you up, steady you, and then calm the storm.
Whether you have stepped out in faith to “walk on water” or you are still in the boat pondering if you should go; know that He is with you and will not let you down.
Jesus is and always has been your bridge over troubled waters. The enemy may be able to stir the waters of adversity but he has no authority over the One who stills the wind and waves. Now is the time to come into agreement with the reality of “Who He is” rather than what your eyes see. The natural storm you are facing has no authority over Christ or over those who belong to him.
Raise your voice and declare that the God above all gods, the Creator of all things, the Author and the Finisher is Lord of your life and has authority over the wind, the waves, and the storm that has been sent to sink you and cause you to doubt.
Watch how peace will come to you in the midst of this storm because you have come into agreement with the Prince of Peace. Now is the time to shift your eyes from the wind and waves to the Prince of Peace who calms your storm and calms your fears.
“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10
He is even now reaching out to grab your hand and save you.
