How You Think Of Yourself

Stop and think with the mind of God, rather than one of the world.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12:3

Whether a positive opinion or a negative opinion, everyone has an opinion or thought about themselves. The world is constantly telling people that they are the greatest and can do whatever they want to do. As a result, many believe that they are the greatest thing on earth and a gift from God to all.

Paul tells the Romans that everyone must be careful how they think of themselves. They are not to think of themselves too highly, but with a sober mind as God has given each one a measure of faith.

Pride is something that the world thrives on. It is putting oneself up and above everyone else, feeling that one is better than everyone else. This can easily occur when one becomes very successful at something that others cannot begin to accomplish.

Actions and thoughts like this often occur inside the church. Some believers feel that they are God’s greatest gift to the church, whether local or national.

While God can use someone in mighty ways, that person is no different than anyone else. Each person is given a measure of faith to believe in God. Each person is given strength and wisdom to do what is being done. No one is more special than anyone else in the sight of God.

Individual believers need to realize that they are no better than the person next to them. They are also no worse than that same person. Everyone has sinned and everyone is saved in the exact same manner–believing in Jesus.

This is what guides a person as to how one thinks about oneself.

When you look at yourself and your life you have some opinions about yourself. These opinions may be positive or negative. Rather than being like the world, seek what God’s opinion about you is. Stop and think with the mind of God, rather than one of the world, and see who you really are and what you are really like. You are a child of God, saved by grace through faith, given by God, in the blood of Jesus just like every other believer.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know who you are in Jesus; that God will help you to properly see yourself in the right way; and that God will help you overcome self-pride in your life.
