Heaven’s Windows

Only the sight of God’s hand at work and the recognition of it will open up the window of the soul.

Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.

The royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning answered the man of God and said, “Behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” Then he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.”

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

Genesis 6:11, 2 Kings 7:2, Malachi 3:10 (NASB)

Windows are useful; they keep the heat in and the cold out, and they allow the light in too. How often do we gaze out the window upon a nice view or a raging rainstorm? We often speak of the eyes as being the windows of our soul, seeing things that touch our hearts or inspire us. As I write this I am reminded of a BBC children’s television show named “Play School” and in particular Floella Benjamin inviting us to go through either the round, square, or arched window, into an adventure of our imagination. Clearly, windows are either glass or in our imagination (of the soul), and they open up opportunities either physical or spiritual. Children of God pass through the windows of scripture and prayer as we seek closeness with Father God.

In today’s devotional, we look through the windows of Heaven as found in the above three scriptures; these windows are there for a purpose…to guide us in our walk with God, keeping us on the straight and narrow path. In the first verse, there is no direct mention of a window, but there is the earth seen by “the sight of God…filled with violence” (sin). Through this window the sins of men are seen and exposed to the judgment of the Almighty – He sees all then and also today. He misses nothing.

In our second verse, we find the unbelief of the royal officer regarding Elisha’s expounding of God’s Word. Elisha prophesies the relief of Samaria’s hunger by the hand of God, which the king’s officer disbelieves. Yet Matthew Henry describes it best: “man’s extremity is God’s opportunity of magnifying his own power; his time to appear for his people is when their strength is gone. Unbelief of men has never ceased throughout history; we see it often in the media and from those who mock our faith in God. Such unbelief closes the windows of Heaven from the side of the unbeliever; only the sight of God’s hand at work and the recognition of it will open up the window of the soul.

In the third and final verse, the windows of Heaven are opened by God to the repentant sinner who recognizes His work, and their need of redemption by His Grace. The blessings of Heaven are only poured out on those who repent and act upon it, bringing their sacrificial offerings into God’s house – the windows of Heaven are opened. It is only by God’s grace that the windows of Heaven are opened to the repentant sinner; there is nothing that he or she can do for themselves apart from repent unto Him who can save.

Dear Reader, can you see the blessings of Heaven’s windows being open in your daily walk with God? Is there some sin smearing your view out of the window? You need a cleaning solution to wipe the window clear – repentance before the throne of Grace…then you will see His blessings!
