Following the River

I follow the river of life that nourishes my soul each day.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

John 7:38 (NASB1995)

Recently, I went for a walk up the hill to the Formonthills Woodland. The weather forecast was for rain in the afternoon, so I headed out in the morning. It was a lovely day with a light autumn breeze rustling the leaves in the trees. The flocks of mixed finches and tits flitting between trees were a sure sign of the season, as was the first leaf fall on the paths with some bright red rowan berries. Walking is a spiritual discipline for my soul as well as exercise for my body – I love it.

My route was interrupted by a closed path due to reconstruction of the old path, and I had to make a change. My problem was that I was on the wrong side of the burn (river); therefore, I had to follow the water looking for the next crossing. As I followed the wee path by the burn in the shade of the woodland, it occurred to me this was an apt illustration of my walk with God – I follow the river of life that nourishes my soul each day.

His water gives us life if we follow it. Straying from the narrow path of following Jesus takes us away from His living water, leaving us spiritually thirsty and prone to slake our thirst at any water source, no matter how contaminated it may be. Only His life-giving river of life is free from contamination and will rejuvenate our souls for the journey Heavenward.

Dear Reader, Are you following God’s life-giving river of life today? Be sure that if you do, others will see it flowing through you and will also be drawn to it. May we drink of His life-giving water today!
