Describing God

While many different words can be used to describe God, holy is one that covers everything

Posted on

The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Revelation 4:8

Descriptions of a person help give others an idea of what the person is like. Often the descriptions are about the physical looks of a person, but they can also describe the person’s character. Physical descriptions help another recognize a person, while characteristic descriptions help one know what that person may be like.

As John was brought up in the spirit into heaven, he sees four creatures around the throne of God constantly calling God holy and that He is the One who was and is and is to come.

Asking people to describe God will always come up with many different types of answers. Some will think of Him as the god of the Muslims, while others may think of Him as one of the many Hindu gods. Depending upon their upbringing will change how a person describes God.

Others have a closer Christian view of Him but describe Him as a harsh dictator who does not care or really love. This occurs due to hurts or pains in their past.

While many different words can be used to describe God, holy is one that covers everything. With the word ‘holy’ God is set apart, different and perfect in every way.

God will always do what is right every time for every person, all at the same time. He will never do what is wrong or harmful in a bad way, but will always do what is needed and right. He will show a perfect love that each individual needs in a time of need.

Knowing this, the believer can be like the four creatures and bow down and worship God, calling Him ‘holy, holy, holy’ day and night.

As you think about God, ask yourself how you would describe Him. What characteristics of God stand out in your heart and mind? While doing this, think about how perfect God is in every way. Recognize how holy He is in everything that He says and does. Once you can see how holy and perfect He is, you will want to be like the four creatures and constantly worship Him and call Him ‘Holy’. He is Holy, set apart from the gods of this world.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know who God really is; that you will see God’s character; that you will see God as Holy, perfect and set apart; and that you will worship God day and night.
