Do not turn me over to the desire of my enemies,
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And the violent witness.
King David had many enemies; there were those whose attack was verbal (lies), and then there were those who backed up their words with violence. The situation with enemies of God’s people has not changed down the generations; even in the twenty-first Century, we have enemies. We encounter those who speak against us, and maybe even hand us over to the authorities – but in our Western society, it is rare to be physically attacked for our faith Sadly though we can read news of those in other countries who have suffered much for their faith in God, even to the point of death.
And does not abandon His godly ones;
They are protected forever,
But the descendants of the wicked will be eliminated.
Dear Reader, this verse is the last word of prayer in this psalm; it is a word of petition in the face of David’s enemies. It can be our prayer also when people attack us for our faith in God. May we have the confidence that we read of in the earlier verses of this psalm; knowing that our Father God holds us in His care, no matter who stands against us.
